You can begin housebreaking a puppy while it is still very young. During their first 5 to six weeks, you can start their training for housebreaking. If you think it could still be difficult for your dog to begin the training at this age, you can always choose to do it after he gets a little older.
It is very important for your dog to be trained for housebreaking so that you can avoid having to clean poop inside the house. You might want to take your dog outside to do his potty time.
Below are the steps to begin housebreaking a puppy:
1. Determine that your puppy will succeed with his training. This means you have to work for it. Do not allow your dog to wander around the house and just ignore it. It is the signal that your dog needs to go out and poop. When this happens, he eventually might litter inside the house. You need to be familiar with these signs so that if you see them in your dog, you will know that it is time for his potty.
2. Have a consistent schedule as to when your puppy has to go litter. It can be the time after he ate his meal. A few minutes before eating a meal, he will need to litter. Make sure to feed him at an exact time each day. it will also make you determine that potty time is near. Watch your dog carefully after taking his meal.
3. After he relived himself outside, give him some time to play for a while before finally giving back his crate.
4. Give the dog your command if he needs to go potty. While outside, tell him that it is now his potty time. That way, he won't just play outside. You can do this by training him to follow you "Go potty now" phrase. The next time he hears it, he will know what you mean. You can give him a nice praise for each time he understands what you say.
5. After your puppy is done pooping, you can let him play outside for a while. He can be very active at this moment. Just let him play for a while.
6. Some dogs will have multiple places to poop outside. They will roam around the yard littering each place. You can avoid this by tying the dog with his leash. That way, he will have to stay in that same spot until he is done littering. You do not want your dog to spread his poop around your yard. Make sure that he knows only a single spot where he can pee and poop.
7. If you begin housebreaking a puppy, you cannot avoid having accidents inside the house. You might forget to take the dog outside and he will litter in the house. If this happens, just clean the area and try not to punish your dog. you need to understand that this is all part of the training.
