Chihuahua Information - Pros and Cons of Owning a Chihuahua

Because the Chihuahua is such a small dog there will be some things that you will need to take into consideration if you are contemplating getting one of these gorgeous furry little dogs as a companion. You should gather all of the Chihuahua information that you can so that you can make an informed decision as to whether one of these dogs will be suitable for your lifestyle.

Let's begin! On the one side of things, there is Pro, or the advantages;

The number one point in support for owning a Chihuahua is that they are fun companions. They are full of amusing antics that make them fun to watch for hours.

The secondary positive point is they are loyal and once bonded with their person they will not be swayed from them. They can get quite territorial over their human person.

The third positive point is they are very quick and intelligent dogs. So much so that sometimes it will seem like they know exactly what you are saying to them. And possibly they do.

A 4th support point in favor is that they make excellent watchdogs. They have excellent hearing and eyesight and not much will get past your eagle eyed little fur friend.

And last (although not necessarily least) we've got the 5th point in support is that they are very easy to groom. The breed comes in two coat varieties, the long and the short. The short coat is very easy to look after. The long coat requires a little more work in that you will need to run a comb through it when it needs it.

Of course, these are just a few of the positive points in favor of getting a Chihuahua.

But it is important that you don't just look at the advantages to owning one of these little dogs. While you are gathering your Chihuahua information you will need to look at the disadvantages to owning this breed as well.

And on the other side, for balance, the Con side, disadvantages:

The primary point against owning a Chihuahua is that they are fragile and this poses problems if you have young children in your family. It is very easy for a Chihuahua dog to get hurt because they weren't seen and got trodden on or a young child got too rough with them.

And the second negative point is that they tend to bark a lot although this can be handled with proper training from the very beginning.

3rd point against is going to be that Chihuahuas don't do very well in colder climates. So if you live somewhere that is particularly cold for a lot of the year you may want to reconsider getting one of these dogs.

4th point in contra is going to be is that they are not really family dogs. They tend to bond with one person and can become quite possessive of that person.

5th and lastly, against is that Chihuahuas are known for two health concerns in particular. These concerns are the molera (a soft spot on the top of the head that doesn't close over completely) and patella luxation (a sliding knee cap).

Now that you have gathered Chihuahua information for each side and the Pros and Cons are lined up, it is time for you to decide if this is the breed of dog you want to own.
