How to Deal With German Shepherd Shedding

The first dog I ever had was a pure bred German Shepherd. I loved that dog however there was thing that I remember besides the intelligent, loyal dog that was my childhood companion. The fur. I have never had an animal since that can shed like that one. Even now, years after she passed away, we can still find tufts of her fur hiding in boxes that we haven't opened in years. My answer was to go out a few times a year during the German Shepherd's biannual under coast shedding and pick loose tufts of hair out with my hands as quickly as possible for up to ten or fifteen minutes at a time. When I was done, fur was scattered in every direction and by the next day there would be even more to pull.

I don't recommend the pull-hair-out-quickly-with-your-hands tactic, but there are ways of dealing with the massive amounts of fur a German Shepherd sheds. The best method to deal with a German Shepherd's shedding is to brush it at least once a day every day. While the breed sheds its undercoat twice a year, it continuously sheds its upper coat. If not brushed daily hair will quickly be on and in everything you own. German Shepherds do not typically need any special brushes, but multiple brushes can be useful. A bristle brush and comb should be all that is needed. Secondly, I recommend that you get a multipurpose vacuum cleaner that has attachments for not only vacuuming floors but upholstery as well. Even with daily brushing, you will not be able to get out all of the fur that your dog will shed and it will get on your furniture. I do not recommend the use of shedding blades unless you are trained in how to use them. These blades can be injure your dog if used improperly. If your dog's shedding has reached the point that not even brushing and vacuuming can contain, consider taking him or her to a professional groomer.

Germans Shepherd shed. Their double coats that are shedding year round will leave so much fur we often are left wondering where it all comes from and how the dog still has some left. The fur can be manageable with daily brushing. Remember though that German Shepherds require consistent brushing or else be buried in a mountain of fur.
