History
One source is quite old simply because most shepherds have been bred for several centuries, It is said that the Beauceron was developed in France in the turn of the 1500's. During World Ward II The Beauceron dog was used as a messenger for the French, but its versatility did not end there. They were also used for their ability to detect mines. In today's times a Beauceron can be found working alongside military for France and or herding, guardianship or conformation in just about everywhere in the world.
General features
The Beauceron has a smooth and solid physique, their look gives off the appearance of a wolf, their nose can be the same length their skull. The Beaucerons tail is almost tucked giving it a hook of an appearance.
Color
Black and tan bark specific signals; harlequin with patches of gray, black and bark.
Coat
Due to the Beaucerons double coat these dogs have been used for work in just about any terrian, wet,muddy you name it! Due to their wet resistant coat which has a rough consistency, coarse but with a fluffy appearance.
Temperament
The Beaucerons temperament is of great devotion and loyalty, they can be calm but when it comes to household it is preferred to have it in a home with no children due to their strong herding instincts, it is best that these dogs are in homes with older children who can take to the dogs strong mind. They pay pretty careful and cautious attention to strangers making them excellent watchdogs. If they are left alone with other dogs they can be somewhat aggressive, but if socialized properly these dogs can be wonderful companions with just about any other breed of dog.
Care
Their coat needs brushing about twice a week, but one must work a little harder to keep the dogs body free of dead falling hair during the shedding season. Beaucerons usually have stomach problems such as gastric torsion so it is recommended that these dogs are take to the vet regularly to maintain great health.
Training
Training for this type of breed should be done with clean, firm and consistent form. Proper training is vital, this will determine if the dog is compatible with older children if at all any and or other dogs. An important fact is that the owner will show you who is pack leader since these dogs are very instinctive and can have a mind of their own.
Activities
Beaucerons need not only physical but also mental exercise because they can become bored easily if they do not get their "outdoor" time. You'd better keep it in with play sessions to stimulate their mind and muscles, but because of their devotion and loyalty to their family these dogs are simply happy to be part of your family and be take to walks or spend quality time with their owners. If you plan to keep one indoors, it is necessary to give adequate space so that they don't get injured romping around indoors due to their above average size.
