Poop eating or coprophagia is the most common filthy behavior problems with dogs. There are lots of ideas why they eat their poop and one of the most common is due to nutritional discrepancy and the lack of food, or the undigested protein which is found in the poop. Perhaps the dog owner should consider improving the value of the food that the dog eats and try to choose the dog food that is being recommended by most veterinarians. Most puppy trainers add pineapple or pumpkin in the dog's meal because these fruits always produce a bitter state in the stool, or they can also try to put Tabasco sauce or pepper on on the droppings. The awful smell will prevent the animal from eating poop.
Giving proper household training and commands like extending your hand and giving a firm voice when you tell the pup to "go away" from the poop should be helpful. If the dog goes backward, this is a mark that the action is good. Give him good treats after every instruction; this makes the dog realize the difference between good and bad. The dog owner can also try to use a treat or a food that the dog likes and try to make him leave it and wait for at least 5 seconds before marking that the action as also good. Do this from time to time so that the dog won't forget the instructions that you have given. Always guide the dog every step of the way or observe the dog from afar and refrain from too much punishing.
Furthermore, dogs also eat their own stool when they are bored or stressed. Provide your dog with enough physical activities. Include the dog in the family's activities and give him affection and love. If the dog is alone, try buying good chewing toys to keep him company.
When the dog is still trying to defecate indoors and eating his feces, consult a veterinarian because it might be that the dog has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, malabsorptive syndromes and other intestinal infections.
