Why Do Dogs Lick Everything?

As you know, dogs are man's best friend. They can be great companions and playmates. However, have you ever wondered why dogs lick everything? There is nothing worse than going to a friend's house in your best clothes, only to be licked into submission by Fido.

First and foremost, it is important to realize that Fido is simply showing affection. Mother dogs teach this behavior to puppies at a very young age. You may notice this if your dog licks you just before curling up to go to sleep. This behavior is likely not a medical problem, just Fido saying good night.

Once you rule out a medical problem and determine that the issue is behavioral, it is important to define the action. Animal behavior experts can help you if you have some background information at your first visit. Determine the length of the licking episodes and the frequency they last. Determine if there is a stimulus that leads to the behavior.

While excessive licking may be just a minor annoyance to you, the dog owner, it can harm the dog or signify medical problems. Licking surfaces like carpet can lead to the dog ingesting fiber or hairs, which is likely to cause a potential life threatening intestinal blockage. This could require immediate surgery. If there is no stimulus to the behavior or the licking is new for your dog, it could mean that there is a medical issue.

Finding out the root of the behavior is great for determining if a trip to the vet is necessary. Bear in mind that dogs are indeed animals, so licking to some extent is normal and a part of their upbringing.
