Are you on the look-out for a great name for your Yorkie puppy? Who would have thought that you might find the perfect Yorkie name in your herb garden or spice rack? In fact, you'll find a lot of names to suit a Yorkie puppy from these sources- so let's take a look right now...
First, as a bit of an aside, I must say that I began this quest of finding Yorkie names from a list of herbs and spices a little confusing at first, because I suddenly realized I didn't know the difference between a herb and a spice! I discovered after some research that herbs come from the leaves of herbaceous (non-woody) plants, while spices are obtained from roots, flowers, fruits, seeds or bark. So sometimes both a herb and a spice come from the same plant: an example of this is Fennel: the leaves of this plant are used as an herb, while the seeds are dried and ground to be used as a spice.
Names from Herbs
So onto the names themselves: let's start with a list of herbs that have names that could be worn by any Yorkie puppy with pride! Please note that this is not by any means a full list of herbs: I've chosen not to include names that wouldn't suit a Yorkie, like Dill, Horehound or Wormwood!
Let's consider the culinary herbs first: these herbs are used to flavor foods and beverages, and most people are familiar with many of these:
Basil
Bay
Chive
Coriander
Curry
Fennel
Marjoram
Oregano
Parsley
Rosemary
Sage
Tarragon
Thyme
My favorites here are Basil, Curry (sounds like a pup who never stays still!), Parsley and Sage (the wise little fellow who knows exactly what you're thinking!).
I found an interesting list of 'Bitter Herbs' which are used more medicinally, and some of these are rather lovely as well:
Angelica
Chamomile
Dandelion
(Milk) Thistle
Rue
Yarrow
Angelica is such a pretty name for a female Yorkie, and Thistle really appeals to me as a name for a male puppy.
Still more investigation led me to find even more herbs, some of which I had never heard of: again, these are mainly used in herbal medicine:
Aloe
Calendula
Comfrey
Dittany
Hyssop
Marigold
Mugwort
Rue
Tansy
Verbena
(Sweet) Woodruff
Wormwood
There are three here which are just adorable for female puppies: Dittany, Tansy and Verbena: aren't they beautiful? And the boys certainly aren't left out: I just love the idea of a little Yorkie boy called Mugwort (I think it has tones of Harry Potter in it), and Woodruff also appeals to me.
Names from Spices
There's a lovely list here of spices from the world over: let's just dive right on in!
Anise
Caraway
Cardamom
Cassia
Cayenne
Celery
Chili
Cinnamon
Clove
Cumin
Galangal
Ginger
Jalapeno
Juniper
Licorice
Myrrh
Mustard
Nutmeg
Onion
Paprika
Pepper
Saffron
Sesame
Tabasco
Tamarind
Tumeric
Vanilla
Some of these are clearly spicy, and would suit a puppy who is never still: I can even imagine a group of Yorkie siblings named Chilli, Jalapeno, Paprika, Pepper and Tabasco! (If you needed a sixth name, I'd add Mustard!)
A lovely Christmas trio could be Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Myrrh: so pretty and aromatic!
Anise, Cassia and Saffron are delightful for female Yorkies, and Caraway, Licorice and Onion are lovely for males, although clearly many of these names would work beautifully for either gender (I'm just showing my own biases here!)
One name I kept out of the Herb List was Catnip: probably not a great name to give your Yorkie, but I can see situations where as a nickname it would be perfect!
